Here is a little history about Savannah, Georgia! Savannah has so much history, it was hard to pick only ten facts about it, but here they are! See how many you knew and how many you did not!
1. Savannah was founded in 1733 by General James Edward Oglethorpe, who came here from England.
2. Oglethorpe organized Savannah into grids and now the city is dubbed 'America's First Planned City', with wide streets and 24 public squares. 21 of the original squares were carefully preserved throughout the years and still exist today.
3. Parts of Forest Gump were filmed in Savannah, most notably the bench Forest sat on the north side of Chippewa Square, for the famous "Life is like a box of chocolates" quote. The bench is now located in the Savannah History Museum.
4.Girl Scout founder Juliette Gordon Low was born in Savannah, and the very first Girl Scouts meeting was held in Savannah.
5. After General Sherman marched through Savannah during the Civil War, he was so impressed by Savannah's beauty that he sent a telegraph to President Lincoln to offer Savannah to him as a Christmas present. See the telegraph Here. This is also one of the main reasons Savannah was not completely destroyed in the war.
6. The book, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is based on events in Savannah from the 1980s, particularly on the murder trials of John Williams.
7. The Pirates' House was an inn that is mentioned in Robert Louis Stevenson's book "Treasure Island", it is now a restaurant.
8. One of the largest in the country, Savannah's Historic District was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966.
9. Savannah was voted one of the "World's Top Ten Trendy Travel Hot Spots" by the New York Times.
10. Savannah was the first capital of the 13th colony and later of Georgia.

Bonventure Cemetery This is not to be missed! Huge, centuries old Magnolia trees, gothic statues, and hundreds of years of history lie in this cemetery. Once known for it's famous statue that graced the cover of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, this 100-acre cemetery is now home to Holocaust memorials and colonial legends.
Yes, that's us! But we are truthfully a great historic sight to see in Savannah! Dakota, our black Labrador retriever has welcomed guests to our Savannah Bed & Breakfast for the past six years. He passed a few days ago and will be greatly missed by our staff and returning friends.
Not only did he love to greet the guests, he was known to gently nudge them toward the parlor to enjoy some after dinner port wine.
We greatly appreciate the comments made by our friends on Facebook. Although our inn will be a bit lonely without Dakota, we gladly welcome small well-trained dogs to come and stay with us.
