Savannah in the Movies

kathleen Dupuis - Monday, June 10, 2013

Everyone loves a good movie.  They have the ability to take their audience into another world.  Instantly you leave your world and are taken on a new adventure.  Movies are fascinating pieces of art.  Movie-makers have seen the beauty of Savannah and want that in their films.  In fact, Savannah is welcoming Medient Studios who will be building a $90 million studio in our backyard.   Savannah’s unique look makes it perfect for filming.

Not until the 1970’s did movies become popular to film in Savannah.  One of the first movies filmed here was Cape Fear in 1962.  Savannah has actually been featured in over 46 films.  Some of the more popular movies are as follows: The Conspirator, The Last Song, The Legend of Bagger Vance, The General’s Daughter, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, Something to Talk About, and Forrest Gump.
The beautiful scenery that Savannah had to offer these films are historic downtown, the beach, train stations, parks, rivers, The Globe, the Talmadge Bridge, and historic forts.  Its all waiting here for you.  Come experience Savannah to see where these stories told or to make a story yourself.

Wright Square

kathleen Dupuis - Thursday, May 30, 2013
This is our series of blogs on the squares of Savannah.  This is part 2.  If you'd like to start from the beginning, click here.  The second square created was Percival Square after Lord Percival, the man credited with the naming of Georgia.  If you're familiar with Savannah, you know that there is no square named Percival in Savannah and you're thinking I should have my blogging permit revoked.  First, there's no such thing as a blogging permit and secondly, the square was renamed thirty years later after royal governor James Wright.  Before the renaming in 1739, the square became the burial area of Chief Tomochichi.  Tomochichi was instrumental in assisting James Oglethorpe in establishing Savannah.  His negotiation and mediation skills would prove invaluable to English-Native American relations.  He and Oglethorpe became lifelong friends and when he died, Oglethorpe honored him in the square.

Approximately 150 years later, Tomochichi's importance in the eyes of Savannahians had waned and his pyramid of stones was removed.  The square would now by a tribute to William Washington Gordon (grandfather of Juliet Gordon-Low, founder of the girl scouts), interestingly the only native of Savannah to receive such an honor.  Gordon was a well-respected politician and businessman serving as Savannah's mayor and later its representative to the state Senate.  In business, he served as the president of a railroad.  Ironically, a year after his death, his company would desecrate a sacred Native American site.

The apathy toward Native Americans did not go unnoticed, most notably by Gordon's own widow and daughter-in-law.  The two women were outraged at the treatment of Tomochichi's memory and vowed to make amends.  They asked for granite from the Stone Mountain Monument Company, who offered it to them at no charge.  The ladies refused to accept it for free. The company sent her a bill for an absurdly low amount--some say fifty cents--due on "Judgment Day". Gordon's widow paid the amount promptly, saying she would be occupied with her own affairs on that day. The monument was erected in 1899 and still stands there today.

June Events

Blues, Jazz & BBQ • May 31st-June 2nd

Savannah will be hosting its first Blues, Jazz, and BBQ festival on River Street.  Savannah is already known for its vibrant music scene, but we are also home to some award winning barbecue.  Imagine sitting down over a stack of ribs to the sound of guitar strings being plucked to a soulful melody, punctuated by the visual splash of fireworks lighting up the sky.  Sounds like a good night to me.  Saturday, will feature more fun with when the local hot rods are rolled out for the viewing.  To top it of part of the proceeds will go to Horsin' Around, a local charity that uses horses to increase interaction from special needs individuals. http://www.riverstreetsavannah.com/

Cooper

kathleen Dupuis - Friday, May 17, 2013

For many years, guests of The Olde Savannah Inn were greeted with the wagging tail of Dakotah, part Labrador part concierge.  When Dakotah passed away, the  bed and breakfast mourned the loss, but pressed on.  Recently, Kathleen heard about a sweet beagle that needed her help.  Cooper had been abandoned on the side of the road.  He was found and placed in a shelter, but Cooper's time was rapidly running out.  He had to be adopted or would be put to sleep.  A plea went out to save Cooper's life and people began spreading the word.  Kathleen learned of Cooper's situation through her daughter and decided to spring into action.  She began corresponding with the people in North Carolina where Cooper was being held.  Incidentally, one of the women had stayed at the inn and remembered her.  Working quickly, paperwork and other obstacles were overcome and Cooper had a new lease on life.  Upon entering the inn for the first time, he strode in eager to explore his new home.  Cooper has now taken up where Dakotah left off; welcoming guests and helping them feel like they too are at home.

Johnson Square in Savannah

kathleen Dupuis - Tuesday, May 07, 2013
One of the things Savannah is best known for is her squares so starting today we'll be doing a blog on a square every month.  We'll start our journey with Savannah's first and biggest square: Johnson Square.  The square was named after longtime friend of General Oglethorpe and Governor of South Carolina, Robert Johnson.  Johnson aided Oglethorpe by providing food and a safe escort to Georgia, but he is most well known for a successful military campaign defending Charleston from pirates.
Since it was the first, Johnson square served many purposes for the locals.  Many of the essential shops for everyday life were located there including a sundial to tell the time.  The sundial was dedicated to the memory of William Bull (also the namesake of Bull Street).  Bull was another South Carolina resident who assisted in the creation of Savannah.
Speeches were delivered here by Presidents Washington and Monroe, Daniel Webster, and General Marquis de La Fayette.  News of South Carolina's succession from the Union was also read here.  In the middle of the square is an obelisk dedicated to Nathaniel Greene, ironically the namesake of a neighboring square.  Originally, the obelisk was purely decoration until years later when the Revolutionary War era General's remains were interred there.

Savannah May Activities

Seafoodfest on the River, May 3-5

There are so many great things that will be happening in Savannah in May.  I just want to tell you a few so you will trust me when I say that you will not be bored in Savannah.  Things kick off right with on the first weekend with seafood. . .lots of seafood.  Savannah Riverfront presents Seafoodfest on the River starting at noon.  In Savannah, we enjoy fresh seafood all the time, but that won't keep us from having a big festival about it.  We're going to be chowing down on gumbo, shrimp, low country boil, oysters, crab legs, and much more.

Savannah's Scottish Games, May 11

Many are familiar with our spectacular St. Patrick's Day celebration, but what most don't know is that we also have a great event celebrating the Scottish in us.  May 11th is Savannah's Scottish Games.  The games feature activities dating back 1,000 years.  There will be feats of strength, graceful dancing, musical entertainment, and mini versions for the kiddies.

Coastal Wetlands Day, May 21

We don't just have the sea, we are also the home of some amazingly beautiful wetlands.  The 21st is Coastal Wetlands Day.  Georgia's slice of the coast possesses one third of Atlantic's salt marsh.  Oatland Island Wildlife Center will be celebrating the day with valuable insights into the local ecosystem.  The best part is that its 100% free to come.

Savannah Fashion Week

Kevin Cartee, Image Consultant/Wardrobe Stylist

When you think of Savannah one conjures up many thoughts; Antebellum homes, moss, and even Paula Deen. However, something you may not have thought about is Savannah's rich and growing fashion and style community.

In the heart of Savannah, Savannah College of Art and Design as well as Savannah Arts Academy certainly keep the Savannah Fashion Community teaming with new talent.

Savannah is certainly proud of her Art Schools. “Georgia’s First City” also brags about the many artists and fashion professionals such as Makeup Artists, Hair Stylist, Image Consultants & Wardrobe Stylists, and Boutique Owners.

Savannah Fashion Week runs from 4/22/13 – 4/26/13 and showcases events, such as trunk shows and runway shows, that run throughout the week.

What is a “Trunk Show”? Well, I’m glad you asked.

A trunk show is an event where designers or clothing vendors set up a “pop up shop” in a store or other venue. These vendors sell clothes directly to customers.

Get tickets at www.savannahfashionweek.org.

Friday April 26, 2013

The SID Fashion Show is sure to end Savannah Fashion Week with a bang.

Savannah Style Expert Style Tip:

Women: Ladies look out for dresses with a built in bib necklace. I find that everywhere I go these and dresses/tops with a peplum skirt are very popular.

Men: Gents keep your eyes peeled for bow ties and mixing and matching patterns. It’s a little thing I like to call “Enjoy the Clash.” This year, it’s okay that your outfit does not coordinate perfectly. It is all about finding complementing colors and in the same family and then kicking your outfit up a notch with different patterns and textures.

March Hot Spot Savannah, GA (from bnbfinder.com)

kathleen Dupuis - Wednesday, March 06, 2013

If there’s one word that captures the aura of Savannah, GA, it’s enchanting. From the garden squares filled with towering oaks draped in Spanish moss to the grand, historic homes lining cobblestone streets, the “Hostess City of the South” will captivate you with its laid-back southern charm.

The Olde Savannah Inn Bed & Breakfast
The Olde Savannah Inn Bed & Breakfast

What to Do: Let the rhythmic “clip-clop” from a horse-drawn carriage ride take you back to Savannah’s historic roots as you enjoy a leisurely tour through the largest National Historic District in the U.S. It’s also where the 22 garden squares, called the city’s “heart and soul” by some, can be found. Designed to be an essential part of the downtown area, these squares provide a relaxing tree-covered area to stroll or relax while reading the paper by cooling fountains, lush gardens, and historical monuments.

Follow the cobblestone streets and southern hospitality to the waterfront of the Savannah River. River Street is a destination for quaint storefronts and fine-dining establishments built inside centuries-old buildings that once housed goods in one of the busiest ports in America. You can even set sail down the Savannah River and catch a glimpse of the city skyline from aboard an open-air canopy deck on a riverboat.

If you make your way to Savannah this month, don’t be surprised if you find the Forsyth Park fountain flowing green! "The Greening of the Fountain," taking place on March 8th, is part of the city’s massive and long-standing St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. Last year, Savannah hosted the second largest St. Patrick’s Day parade in the world and began the celebrations as early as two weeks before. If you’re in town Saturday, March 16th, go green for the 189th Annual Savannah St. Patrick’s Day Parade.......

Where to stay:

The Olde Savannah Inn Bed & Breakfast welcomes guests with gorgeous French Renaissance furnishings in each of the five rooms. Situated only a block from Forsyth Park, the inn puts you steps away from Savannah’s award-winning restaurants and shops and is a perfect location to watch the St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
